There are 3 main types of laptop batteries.
Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) laptop batteries were the first rechargeable batteries. They were quite cheap and had a high output. Yet, NiCd were quite heavy and are not exploited today any more.
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are unsuitable for highly advanced laptops of today. Their output is higher comparing with NiCd batteries. Moreover, they are cheaper and safer. The only drawback is that they have the so-called memory effect. If the battery has not discharged entirely, it will remember it and will generate less energy than it can do.
Lithium Ion (LiON) batteries are normally recommended to install in technically advanced models. They are lighter comparing with NiCd and NiMH batteries and have not got any memory effect. However, they are rather expensive.
Actually the price for a laptop depends on how many hours you can keep your laptop running. So, it mainly depends upon purposes you use your laptop for. Those who travel extensively, need an extended power source.
If you want to replace your battery, ensure it is compatible with a laptop make, in spite of the fact that a lot of batteries now are compatible with all makes. Afterwards consider two main ratings on it: Volts and Milliamps. The voltage should be within 10% of the original battery voltage. When buying a battery, always seek the one with the biggest Milliamps figure.
An external laptop battery is connected to a laptop through an AC adapter plug which includes an adapter, a cord as well as thirteen other connectors.
When you buy an AC adaptor, insure that it will suit the voltage and current output. This information is generally placed on labels of a laptop and on the original adapter.
